pots of coloured water

Walking Water Experiment

This is one of the best easy home science experiments you can use to start to teach children about physics and colours! It’s great for children of almost any ages and it’s really straightforward, too.

What you will need

  • Three clear glass jars
  • A jug of water
  • Water soluble paints in two different colours
  • Two paper towels

How to do it

  1. Fill two of your jars with water, to about two-thirds of the way up. Leave the third empty.
  2. Add paint to the water – one colour in the first jar and a different colour to the second jar. Add enough to completely colour the water when mixed.
  3. Fold both of your paper towels twice lengthwise, so they are long and narrow.
  4. Place the three jars (the two containing coloured water and the one with nothing inside) in a triangle shape, so that they all touch.
  5. Place the end of one paper towel in the first jar of coloured water. Place the end of the other paper towel in the second jar of coloured water.
  6. Bend both paper towels over and place the two dry ends in the empty jar – making sure that the opposite ends are still soaking in the coloured water.
  7. You’ll see the paint start to creep up the towels and over into the empty jar! Once in the new jar, they’ll mix to create a totally new shade.
