Science Fizz
This is one of our favourite easy science experiments to do at home! It’s a simple reaction that’s perfect for encouraging young children to be curious about chemistry.
What you will need
- A muffin tray
- Different shades of food colouring
- A large pipette or eye dropper
- Baking soda
- A small container of vinegar diluted in water
- Optional: goggles to protect your little one’s eyes from irritation if you’re concerned that they may handle the mixture and touch their face
How to do it
- Secretly drip two or three good-sized drops of food colouring into the centre of each muffin tin in the tray, alternating different shades.
- Cover each drop with a tablespoon of baking soda. If any colour shows through, add a little more until it’s fully hidden.
- Lay out the muffin tray, the container of vinegar water and the pipette, then ask your child to pick up some of the vinegar water in the pipette and drop it into one of the muffin tins.
- The baking soda will magically fizz and change colour!
- Watch them experiment with each tin, revealing different shades.
